Editor’s note: Marcom Weekly is excited to welcome our first podcast series, “The Optics Podcast,” that supports our mission to advance diversity and inclusion in marketing communications and media. Dane Alexander McMillan is the host and producer of this series. McMillan brings several years of experience managing the optics of major clients via Ketchum, BerlinRosen and now as the associate communications manager for The Culture Division at Condé Nast.

As someone who works in public relations, it’s important for me to be conscious of how to strategically and appropriately deliver messages when representing a client. As a black man who works in public relations, it’s doubly important for me to be conscious of how I strategically and appropriately deliver messages when representing not only a client, but myself in every day-to-day interaction I have. I don’t believe that I’m the only one with that experience. In fact, I believe that those of us who work in industries where there aren’t too many people that look like us, can identify with subconsciously feeling like you’re constantly having to represent your entire race, gender, ethnicity, etc. This is something that needs to change.

“The Optics Podcast,” is a platform I created that is dedicated to highlighting successful people of color in industries where we are represented. Those who have broken glass ceilings, shattered expectations of those before them and continue to make history as “the first.” This is the platform where we will get to share our stories from our upbringing, experiences in the workplace, and words of wisdom for the next generation of young professionals to better navigate their careers.

Listeners can expect to gain insight into how these success stories came to fruition and how they can implement learned lessons into their own careers. Additionally, listeners can participate by sending in questions and ideas to me and the team at theoptics@marcomweekly.com.

“Create what you wish already existed,” was the best advice I received and I hope that “The Optics Podcast,” not only serves to diversify the demographics of the workforce in the future but also grants the wishes of many.

For more, listen to “The Optics Podcast,” on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts and MarcomWeekly.com.
